"Windows Vista Security Posture", presented by Matthew Cook

Details

Microsoft introduced numerous security enhancements in new the Windows Vista Operating System. How do they affect the overall security posture of a computer running Vista a year since launch? Taking a holistic viewpoint on IT security, Matthew Cook examines if the Vista Operating System is more secure in the home and/or workplace.

The presentation will examine features of the Operating System, Internet Explorer, Bitlocker, Phishing Filter, Personal Firewalls and its footprint on the network, and will hopefully answer the question, "is it time to upgrade?". There will be plenty of opportunities for interactive discussion and the later half of the presentation will cover IPv4 and IPv6 Vista networking in more technical detail.

About the Presenter

Matthew Cook, is the Senior IT Security Specialist at Loughborough University and manages the Security & Compliance Team. Matthew has been a member of the IT Services department at Loughborough University since 1999. During this time he has worked in numerous areas of IT development.

Over the years, Matthew has worked on a number of national high profile projects including the JANET National Web Cache Service. At its peak in 2002 it was servicing 100 million requests per day and managing 240MBits/s peak traffic from HE and FE institutions throughout the UK. More recently Matthew is now contributing to the JANET Training portfolio of courses. He has written a number of course books, introduced virtualisation for training activities and is a regular hands-on trainer throughout the UK.

Matthew has an extensive knowledge of wide ranging Operating Systems and networking technologies. He has spoken at many conferences on various security matters, these presentations, papers and lectures are available at escarpment.net.
