Agents have been described as "objects with attitude" -- software systems which are specified and programmed in terms of mentalistic notions such as beliefs, goals and desires. In this talk I will show how this approach to software development has led to very high level programming languages which include beliefs and goals as basic programming constructs. Such agent programming languages both make it easier for programmers and users to understand the behaviour of complex agent based software systems and facilitate reasoning about the correctness of (agent) programs at a much higher level of abstraction that current verification techniques.
